Tiang & Partners' attorneys face challenges in document review, legal research, and translation due to the complexity of cross-border legal issues.

To address this, the firm created a core deployment team, including two senior partners and project leaders, to develop a risk-based AI framework. A project manager was later appointed to handle daily administration and build a group of champion users.

“We ran a series of quality tests with various LLM outputs checked and graded by humans and assessed on a 5-point scale,” Cook said. “Our experience with Harvey was overwhelmingly positive from the get-go, and the tool has actually improved in the time that we have been using it.”

During Harvey's deployment, Tiang & Partners created rules, protocols, e-forms, quizzes, and a live activation briefing. The firm consolidated resources in SharePoint and used Harvey to co-write high-quality content. Throughout the process, they held feedback sessions and set up Teams and email lists for collaboration. Ongoing refresher and prompt-engineering training is planned, in collaboration with Harvey’s Customer Success team.

As a result, attorneys are using Harvey to deliver higher-quality client service with faster turnaround times.

With an international client base, Tiang & Partners made particularly quick use of Harvey’s translation tools, allowing attorneys to collaborate more efficiently across regions by automating legal translation tasks.

“Within two weeks of deployment, Harvey was handling all first-cut translations within our permitted usage rules,” Cook said. “By the end of the month, one of our department heads was already talking about doubling our licenses.”

For example, Cook shared that during a discussion about a foreign-language document, he ran the document through Harvey for a live translation. This allowed the team to immediately prioritize key sections for review with their native-speaking colleagues.

Harvey’s translation capabilities now allow the firm to translate legal advice into clients’ local languages, enhancing their service. Non-native English speakers use Harvey for better English content, and vice versa, giving Tiang & Partners a competitive edge.

The Tiang & Partners team now leverages Harvey to generate, edit, and enhance various legal and non-legal documents. Attorneys liken Harvey to a trainee solicitor, with its strength lying in augmenting human expertise rather than replacing it.

“The key is learning how to bridge the gap between AI-generated output and human insight,” Taylor said. “Harvey drafts everything from press releases and social media posts to training materials and speeches. These first drafts are then settled by humans, and never used without vetting. We stand behind all output as if it was written ab initio by a human.”

By seamlessly integrating Harvey into their workflow, Tiang & Partners has increased efficiency while maintaining the high standards of their work product.

Harvey serves as a thought partner for attorneys, helping analyze contracts, business plans, insurance claims, and thought leadership. Its versatility extends to complex formats like HTML, Markdown, CSVs, and JSON, making it a powerful tool for structured data.

"Recently, I used Harvey to plot dates in an ASCII-based calendar, helping me visualize a project timeline," Cook said.

By acting as an intelligent assistant, Harvey enhances attorneys’ ability to quickly process and analyze a wide range of documents, streamlining workflows and providing valuable insights across various formats.

Harvey has saved Tiang & Partners’ attorneys more than 10 hours per week on tasks such as document review, legal research, and translation.

“Harvey brings us to the frontier in the legal domain,” Taylor said. “This contrasts with other generative AI products, which are just interfaces for domain agnostic models.”
